Check out the new Linux Game Server Package, as the first beta program called Damn Small Game Server, is now coming to first release under the title of Linux Game Server. It has been an incredible release with over 200+ downloads of the beta release. Games servers should be about having fun, and this game server package is ready to go out of the box, you just need to bring the fun yourself (or the BFG?). This release comes in two varieties, an all in one server, sort of like a swiss army knife. The other version is a slim edition. The slim editions feature one game installed on it’s own mini OS. This allows for multiple small servers of your choice to run. The larger package, the All in One, or BEAST as it is called, features a comprehensive game server series pre-installed and ready to go.

Why Bother?

How about a web managed server interface? The scalability and portability of VMware, and how about FREE??

This package was created by Alex Witherspoon as an educational demo to show the potential use of VMware and highly modular services consolidation.

LGS is a series of small dedicated servers that are created to run in a minimal state such that they support a single service, or game. This allows for a VMware host to run many independent servers which reduces collateral damage when a single service becomes unstable or overloaded. This allows for simultaneous deployment of many secured, and powerful services onto a single platform or several.

The intent for the build was also to take away the time involved with building up game servers. It is not a terribly difficult task to create game servers at this point, but the time involved can be intensive. This package allows for novice server admins to have a fully working robust server, while more advanced admins still retain the complete control of the OS all through a web managed, root enabled interface.

Features & Benefits

Each Mini server and the Complete server are built on an identical OS, Ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS with all the unneeded services cut out for efficiency. Each Ubuntu Server install is secured such that it is ready for web deployments, and have been tested in web environments. Each OS contains only the minimal assets needed to run and contains no malware or viruses at time of deployment.
